A traditional afternoon tea in town: Andrews Café Tea Room

By- MC Tan

Tucked away in a quiet courtyard in Chapel Walk, yet close to all Sheffield city centre’s shops and attractions, stands a quaint little café called, Andrews Café Tea Room.

If you ever wonder where is a good place in Sheffield to have a jolly good old traditional afternoon tea, then you’re at the right place.

A family run business, Andrews Café Tea Room had been serving traditional afternoon tea to the locals for about 3 years, starting back in March 2009.

However, back then when Andrew came across the recession in London, he had move back to Sheffield. With the money he got, he then set up the Andrews Café Tea Room.

The initial idea of opening a café tea room in Sheffield was mainly because there wasn’t many café tea rooms in Sheffield, and so this became an opportunity.

Unlike other coffee house chains, Andrews Café Tea Room offers more services such as customers get lead to their seats and they get to order from their table.

Farran Whewell, 21, son of the owner is the barista at the café. Even though he graduated from the University of Sheffield with a law degree, he decided to continue his parent’s business.

“This café mirrors the Bettys’café (a popular traditional family tea room), so it’s sort of like a Bettys’ for the Sheffield people,” said Farran.

“Back then, there was a gap in the market for tea rooms in Sheffield. You can see Starbucks and Costa shops everywhere, but there wasn’t a lot of tea rooms like this. So I guess that sort of how the idea of having a tea room café in Sheffield started off.”

The café offers breakfast, light lunch and various specials. The impressive menu, however, is the Full Afternoon Tea.

With a selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, homemade carrot and coffee cakes, and a pot of English tea, it’s a traditional afternoon tea that international students shouldn’t miss out.

If you are a student, do drop by at the café after 2pm as you’ll receive an extra 20% discount by just showing your student ID card.
